Appliance Repair Diagnostic Fees: Compare the Final Bill
Separate the visit fee from the repair total
Sears' diagnostic-fee FAQ says it waives the fee when the recommended repair proceeds; otherwise the diagnostic fee is payable. That is one provider's policy, not an industry-wide rule.
Write down the callout fee, parts, labor, taxes, return-visit charges and any credit. Ask whether “repair estimate” means the full total or an amount added after diagnosis. A credit must appear once, not be deducted again from an already discounted total.
Price both approval and refusal
Hypothetical same-scope quotes, with all taxes and visits included: A charges $120 for diagnosis, credited against a $340 full repair. B charges $75 for diagnosis plus $280 for repair, with no credit.
| Decision | Provider A | Provider B |
|---|---|---|
| Approve repair | $340 | $355 |
| Decline repair | $120 | $75 |
A's approved total is $120 + $340 − $120 = $340. B's is $75 + $280 = $355. A saves $15 if you proceed; B costs $45 less if you decline. Neither wins both outcomes. These are invented quotes, not market averages.
If you already paid A's $120 diagnosis, completing the quoted repair needs $220 more. The $340 total still matters for your records, but the next decision should compare remaining costs. Switching to B may add another diagnostic charge; ask before ordering a second visit.
Resolve coverage and scope before booking
First check the warranty's repair process and labor coverage. A covered repair may require a different route from these out-of-warranty examples.
Do not treat a published average as a quote. Whirlpool's service page notes location and diagnostic-fee differences; its displayed average repair figures are based on 2020 data, not today's appointment price.
Compare the same repair, parts specification and written warranty. Get the fee-credit condition, credit expiry and extra-visit policy in writing. If the fault is uncertain or parts availability differs, the $15 modeled saving does not settle the choice. This is a quote-reading method, not a diagnosis or a promise that repair is better than replacement.
